How To Make a 3D ATC / ATB Greeting Card out of chipboard

How to Make a (Quick and Easy) 3D Greeting Card

"A Chip Off The Old Block"

This 3D Artist Trading Chipboard Greeting Card was place atop of a decorated spool

A while back Artist Trading Cards morphed into Artist Trading Blocks
These Artist Trading Cards / Blocks were actually made out of 2X4's which were cut into blocks. Some of the obvious drawbacks were the cutting, sanding, cost to mail and general heft. Wanting to not mess with any of this I designed a chipboard Artist Trading  "Chip Off The Old Block" in approximately the same dimensions.  (There may even be a die out there for this, if not I call copyright dibs...)
These are some of the Artist Trading Block Greeting cards I still have around; most have been gifted for celebrations of family and friends...

These blocks do not have bases put on them, you may use so many things: spools, candle holders, smaller boxes,  tea cups, upside down stem ware, whatever you have at hand.

To make an ATC / ATB

Greeting Card Block you will need the following supplies:

  • Medium Weight Chipboard 5" wide X 12" long
  • Tim Holtz or other ruler
  • Pen, pencil or marker
  • Scissors
  • Glue- quicker drying is best
  • Bone folder or other scoring tool
  • rubber bands
  • Scoreboard (optional)

Start at one side of your chipboard
  • draw a line down one side 1.5" from the side
  • draw another 1.5" line down the other side
(tip:  A Tim Holtz ruler is 1.5" wide)
  • from the bottom draw a horizontal line 1.25" up
  • draw another line 4" up from the last line you drew
  • draw another line 1.5" up from the last line you drew
  • draw another line 4" up from the last line you drew
  • Cut your flaps where I have made the red marks  up to the intersecting line
  • Score on all lines
  • Fold on score lines
  • Glue your block together starting by gluing the middle flaps to one set of the long side flaps
  • Glue the other long flaps on top of the first set of long flaps
  • Rubber band the block together as it dries
  • Flip over and glue the top flaps together
  • Rubber band these last flaps
  • Let dry
Let the decorating and creativity begin, have fun.
